As more people become knowledgeable about skincare products they want to know that the products they use are free from ingredients that can be potentially harmful. There are so many articles and reports in the news and on the internet detailing why you should or shouldn't use a product that contains preservatives. A lot of this information is driven by large corporations, lobby groups, and inconclusive studies that are produced for their gain. In this blog post, we going to briefly discuss preservatives and why they are necessary for skincare formulations.
A product without water
For marketing purposes, many large manufacturers advertise that their products contain natural preservatives when in fact there are no real natural preservatives. The word natural is sometimes up for debate as well. Preservatives are used and needed to fight against fungi, microbes, and bacteria and to extend the life of the product. Often the words antioxidants and preservatives are used interchangeably or incorrectly. An antioxidant is used to inhibit oxidation, meaning it will help a carrier oil like Grape Seed oil from going rancid. However antioxidants will not fight against fungi, microbes, and bacteria. Antioxidants you might be familiar with include: Vitamin E, Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE), and Grapefruit Seed Extract.

So what is a preservative anyway? Well according to Wikepedia it is defined as "A preservative is a substance or a chemical that is added to products such as food products, beverages, pharmaceutical drugs, paints, biological samples, cosmetics, wood, and many other products to prevent decomposition by microbial growth or by undesirable chemical changes."
